Fins Used to Identify and Name White Sharks

Solar Eclipse

Cage Dive with Incredible Adventures and Become a Citizen Scientist

For decades, scientists have been studying white sharks at the Farallon Islands and assigning them names, based on the unique shape of their dorsal fins.

Each shark fin is like a fingerprint. It has a unique series of notches and ridges along the trailing edge that allows us to distinguish one shark from the other, according to scientist Sal Jorgensen. We've been able to show that the fins remain unchanged over decades. So, if you get a good fin ID of a shark, you will be able to identify that shark 10 or 20 years later.

Read more about shark identification on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Blog.

When you join Incredible Adventures for a great white shark expedition to the Farallon Islands, you'll become a citizen scientist, helping to collect photos and environmental data that can be used by scientists who study the Sanctuary's shark population.

Call us at 800-644-7382 to book your San Francisco Great White Shark Adventure or book online. No dive experience is required.  Dive season is from late September through mid-November.
