Chapter Six - The End of an Incredible Adventure
Friday, May 31st - Museums and Departure
Before wheels up in the afternoon there was my one and only chance to hit some of the local museums: The Polytechnical was unfortunately closed for the season as it was being renovated, so Karen and I hopped into the famous Moscow subway and headed for the Museum of Cosmonautics on the outskirts of town. The Obelisk- like structure of a skybound rocket leads the way and Anatoly rubs Yuri's bronze hand for good luck. However no luck again at this museum: Closed for the day for cleaning. I spot Vostok 1 in the background before the rather unfriendly guard shoves me out the door.

We skip the rocket exhibition at the Expo pavilions (too far away and allegedly not This could be YOU!too spectacular anyway) and use our precious time for a mad dash to yet another little known museum, the Aviation and Space museum. On the way to it, we come across the Komarov plaza, but if there ever was a statue of him, it is currently gone for cleaning. We note the spot and move on. The museum at least is open and touring the two small rooms doesn't take much time. However its displays are excellent: Aside from Koroliev's first liquid rocket, there are Sputnik 1 and 2 replicas as well as some space food, Vostok and Sokol space suits. The thing, however, that made it all worthwhile for me, was the full size Buran CDR and PLT sim. Finally an entire Buran cockpit with all the right switches and instruments! As I ran out of film, we also ran out of time, so back to the hotel for our transport to the airport. Some sad goodbyes (are there any happy ones?) to our local guides and we head for Swiss and its renewed service; a nice comfort after a turbulent week, which will stay in my memory forever!
