Have
you seen the Snickers
candy commercial featuring the talking great white sharks?
(If you haven't, you can check it out on YouTube.) The commercial has
stirred up controversy in the shark world. Some think it wrongly reinforces
the myth that sharks like to eat people.
We think it's OK to laugh, as long as you know that in real life, sharks
like to eat seals and sea lions, not people. (Not even if the people
have eaten lots of Snickers candy.)
Each fall, white sharks travel to San
Francisco's Farallon Islands to feed on the area's population of
elephant seals and sea lions. We take shark divers to the Farallones
in hopes of witnessing these natural feeding events, known as predations.
Shark season is late September through mid-November and trips depart
from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Cage divers pay $875 and topside
observers pay $375. No dive experience is required. For available
dates and more details, contact us.

On
April 12, 1961, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the very
first man in space. Exactly 20 years later, on April 12, 1981,
America launched Columbia, the country's first space shuttle.
If you're good at math, you know this year marks the 50th anniversary
of Gagarin's historic flight and the 30th anniversary of Columbia's
historic flight. The anniversaries are not going unnoticed. Events
are planned worldwide to honor these achievements in space travel.
To see some of the events planned, please visit www.yurigagarin50.org
and www.yurisnight.net.
In Florida, workers at Kennedy Space Center gathered to pay tribute
to the shuttle by making a human one for an aerial photo. See
the video here.
Of
course, we think the best way to celebrate space is by going
weightless. You don't have to be an astronaut to experience
zero-gravity. Private zero-gravity flights are available all year
long in sunny St Petersburg, Florida for just $2500. Call or email
for complete details.

Our friends at the Direct Action Resource Center in Little Rock,
Arkansas now offer a one-of-a-kind training course for licensed
Health Care Professionals (HCPs) with interest or involvement
in Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief. Their new "Austere
Medical Program" is designed to prepare HCPs for the
incredible challenge of delivering advanced surgical care under
adverse conditions. The live-tissue Unconventional Surgical Immersion
Course (USIC) is a humanitarian medical action program that replicates
a real-world disaster scenario. It's taught by former Green Berets
and some of the top surgeons in the United States from universities
like Harvard, Yale, UConn, UC Davis, University of Florida
and Emory.
Video posted to YouTube
shows just how realistic the training is. (Yes, that's our very
own Hawke
teaching survival skills. Hawke supports the Austere Medical Program
by either personally teaching the course or by arranging for another
Specops Green Beret Medic to lead the survival training. Hawke
will be back leading survival
courses for Specops and Incredible Adventures once his hit
Discovery Show "Man,
Woman, Wild" wraps up filming.)
If you are a licensed Health Care Professional interested in
participating, or want information on how your corporation can
become involved in sponsoring one or more U.S. Surgical Teams,
please send
us an email.
