The first Douglas DC-3 took flight in 1935 and proved commercial airlines could be profitable, eliminating a need for government subsidies. The DC-3's range and cruise speed made it possible to fly across the continent and to other countries in comfort, completely revolutionizing air travel in the 30's and 40's. The DC-3 is now considered to be the most important plane of its time.

During World War II, more than 10,000 of the planes were produced as C-47s, for use transporting troops. British soldiers knew the plane as the Dakota. Soldiers nicknamed the plane "the gooney bird", because of the taildragger's long wings, fat belly, and bird-like way of taking off.
