Last month, commercial airline pilot Mike G completed SIC training (Second In Command) in our California-based Douglas DC-3. He brought his children and their friends along with him, so they could get to know a plane that might have been built by their grandparents. Mike's mom and dad both worked at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach in the 1940's, when the "Flabob Express" was built.
Here's a bit of what the experienced pilot had to say about learning to fly the DC-3:
"We took off and hopped over to San Bernardino International Airport (KSBD), formerly Norton AFB, for my training. I took off and headed out to the practice area for slow flight, turns, and landing practice at altitude. The handling characteristics of this 80 year old beauty are problematic as the flight controls are not hydraulically boosted. The control yoke is large to compensate for the leverage to turn, climb, and descend. After several hours of flying, my arms, back, and thighs were hurting from manually controlling the airplane. I slept well that night."
And about being able to share the experience with his family:
"The feeling that I had as a father, watching my kids fly a plane that their grandparents possibly built, was and is indescribable! To see your kids enjoy and operate something multigenerational is the pinnacle of being a parent".

2021 HALO Jump Season Opens May 1
Tandem "HALO" jump adventures are available from May to November near Memphis, TN. No prior skydiving experience is required to make a high-altitude "oxygen jump" from nearly 28,000 feet and experience up to two full minutes of freefall.
Sample HALO Adventure Itinerary
Thursday: Equipment fitting and jump training.
Friday: Jump Day
Saturday: Weather back-up day
