Sharks Lure Tourists to San Francisco's Farallon
Islands
The chance to dive with great white sharks is attracting tourists
from all over the world to San Francisco's Farallon Islands. Incredible
Adventures offers one-day shark viewing adventures on select dates
in September, October and November.
July 07, 2011 - San Francisco, California is still best known
for its Golden Gate Bridge, trolley cars, sourdough bread and
sports teams, but the city's reputation as one of the best places
in the world to see a great white shark is rapidly spreading.
Sarasota, Florida based Incredible Adventures has been offering
great shark viewing expeditions
to San Francisco's Farallon Islands since 2005 and has seen
a significant increase in the number of shark divers traveling
to San Francisco from other states and other countries.
"In
2005, only 35% of our clients lived outside of California," said
Incredible Adventures President Jane Reifert. "Last year, 58%
of our customers were from outside of the state, including a record
18% from other countries."
The Farallon Islands are located roughly 27 miles from the Golden
Gate Bridge and are part of the larger Gulf of the Farallones
National Marine Sanctuary. Sharks are the bait that lure tourists
to the islands, but the Farallones also are home to one of the
country's largest seabird colonies and a number of endangered
mammals, including blue and humpback whales.
Sanctuary regulations greatly restrict access to the islands
and surrounding waters. Incredible Adventures operates under the
terms of a Sanctuary permit and offers its shark expeditions on
select dates in September, October and November, when a significant
number of sharks are in the area to fee on the local elephant
seals.
Participants on an Incredible Adventures shark expedition spend
a full day aboard the New Eldorado III, a high-speed catamaran
built for speed and stability offshore. The vessel departs from
San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf and provides a comfortable and
stable platform for dive operations and nature viewing. Each trip
is staffed with a certified dive instructor and a highly knowledgeable
naturalist/marine biologist.
No dive experience is required. The Incredible Adventures shark
cage floats so cage divers essentially snorkel at the surface,
breathing air from an onboard air system. Onboard meals and the
use of a wetsuit are included in the trip price. Cage divers pay
$875 and anyone just wanting to observe sharks from the deck pays
$375.
Incredible Adventures is careful to point out that they cannot
guarantee participants will see white sharks. "We take you to
the best place at the best time of the year, but we can't control
nature," says Reifert. "Our team wants to see white sharks just
as badly as you do, and will do everything they legally can to
make sure you have an incredible adventure."
