Edge of Space:
Adventures at High Altitude
Want to fly to the edge
of space?
Incredible Adventures offers two incredible planes that can
take you there: The MiG-31 Foxhound in Russia and The English
Electric Lightning in South Africa.
How to choose?
Each jet flies very high and each offers something special. Only
you can decide which jet is for you. We can, however, help you
understand the differences between the flights.
MiG-31
flights take place in the town of Nizhny Novgorod, a train or
plane ride from Moscow. You'll take off from the Sokol Aircraft
Building Plant, a facility that's been manufacturing MiGs for
over 70 years and fly with a top Russian test pilot. In the MiG-31,
you can fly almost 21 km high to where the sky appears black above
and blue below. (That's roughly 68,000 ft high.) You'll sit in
the back seat of the MiG and enjoy the view out two side windows.
During the flight, you'll be allowed to take the controls and
experience what it's like to help fly a MiG-31.
Our English
Electric Lightning flights take place at a facility called
Thunder City, located right at Cape Town International Airport.
The Lightning features side-by-side seating, so your view is less
restricted than in the MiG-31. You'll be able to take the stick
and experience flying the jet, just like you can in Russia. However,
while the English Electric Lightning flies very high and you'll
be able to make out the earth's curvature, it can't fly as high
as the MiG. (Weather permitting, you can fly at about 60,000 feet.)
|
You fly higher in the MiG-31 but Lightning flights are
cheaper. Moscow is a lot closer to the US and easier to
get to than Cape Town, but Cape Town is more of a tourist
destination and offers great year-round weather. Security
clearance and a full medical check is required in Russia,
but it's not necessary in Cape Town.
Can't decide? Then we suggest you do what many of our customers
have done. Fly both!
