Video Walkthrough
GYROLAB GL-2000
The GYROLAB GL-2000 is a short-arm centrifuge that
can model the various aspects of a space launch profile up to
2.5 Gs (two and one-half times the natural pull of the Earth).
The cockpit of the GL-2000 is an enclosed space with real-world
visual display and authentic modeling of the interior of a space
vehicle. That's tech-speak for "you'll swear you're inside a real
space vehicle cause it seems so real". You'll actually feel like
you're participating in a space launch in the GL-2000.
Altitude Chamber
Also known as the Hypobaric Chamber, the NASTAR
Altitude Chamber can simulate atmospheric conditions up to 100,000
feet. Since you're still a civilian astronaut in training, you'll
start out with a "flight" to 16,000 feet. When you're over three
miles high, you'll feel many of the effects of a thinning atmosphere
on your body. In the altitude chamber, you'll learn to operate
breathing equipment.
STS-400 Space Training Simulator
The STS-400 is a 25-foot-arm centrifuge with a
full-motion gondola at the end of the arm. The STS-400 is capable
of duplicating the flight profile of any launch vehicle. Think
of it as what a GYROLAB GL-2000 becomes when it grows up. The
experience provided by the STS-400 is so intense that professional
aeromedical staff will be monitoring your mental and physical
health throughout your "flight". They'll be ready to immediately
"land" the "space vehicle" if there's even the hint of possible
trouble.
